The factory plug welds usually do NOT penetrate into the axle tube and that is why the tubes spin in the cast housing tube collar area. If you are not going to race and are mostly street bound welding the tube is probably over kill. If you leave the axles in when you weld the tubes it will help hold itself straight. Another concern is metallurgy.
